Guest Speaker: Andrew Woodrow Butcher, The Beguiling
- Andrew, and colleague Jamie Tabujara, shared their extensive knowledge of the world of Graphic Novels
- Please use this shareable link to access the handout they provided, titled "Graphic Novels for Your Libraries and Classrooms" it includes some useful additional information and links
Perks to working with The Beguiling
- Access to non-book market publications (i.e. backing Kickstarter campaigns and small comic presses gets access to non “mainstream” materials)
- Free delivery to TDSB schools
Why Graphic Novels
- not just for easy to read
- win literary awards
- getting mainstream recognition
- The Beguiling is on the leading edge of the movement
- will build you a quote
- you tell them how to spend half your money... tell them what you’re looking for
- they have a bunch on media tie-ins
- be sure to include the “touching, moving, artful” titles... the stuff that will get your English teachers on board in the long term
Understanding Comics by Scott McLeod
- make someone in the Eng Dept read this book
- we didn’t go to comics class
- we know similes, paragraphs, etc.
- we have a vocabulary and can talk about literature
- we do not have that when it comes to comics
Toronto Comics Arts Festival (TCAF)
- Librarian and Educator Day... use this link to learn more and/or to sign up
- full day of programming
- Fri May 8th @ Bluma Appel Salon at the Toronto Reference Library
- Scott McLeod is the keynote this year... will be talking about visual literacy
- having him is a really big deal
- 3 streams of programming... you decide what you want to do... i.e. build a feminist manga collection, collection maintenance (examples only... hoping for these topics)
- people want to come away with stuff they can use in the classroom
- you’ll have access to reproducibles, activities, as well as enjoy some interesting theoretical discussions
Please browse this shared Google Doc to find (most of?!) the titles Andrew and Jamie shared with us
- I expect that there are a few titles missing, if you remember any, please do add the information to the doc
- Please also add any comments or observations you might have about any of the titles
- Please also advise of any errors... or just fix them! Thanks...
Please also browse this second shared Google Doc with the Teacher Resource materials that were shared with us
- These are the books you'll want to bring in to support your teachers in the classroom
