TedEd Video Opener
- A little inspiration to set us on our way
- For when you feel overwhelmed by all the little things that get thrown our way on a daily basis
- Overcoming Obstacles, by Steven Claunch (use this link to access the lessons and additional resources)
- "When faced with a bump in the road, sometimes we forget we have a choice: overcome the obstacle or let it overcome you. Steven Claunch, who was born without fingers on his right hand and with one leg shorter than the other and has excelled in basketball nonetheless, explains why obstacles can provide an opportunity to both inspire others and develop character."
Guest Speaker: Andrea Payne, TDSB, IL Leadership
- On Leadership... and preaching to other than the choir
- making our voices - our skills as TL’s - heard against a multitude of competing interests and demands
Objectives for the session are to help TL’s develop their leadership practice
- ever experience frustration from knowing that you have “legs” - experience - and a wealth of skills and information to share
- do you feel like you’ve hit that wall… always preaching to the choir?
- does it always seem to be the same 6 or 7 teachers coming to Lunch and Learns, or partner with you willingly
- wonder how to bring the people you wish you could reach on board and make inroads with them?
- are there people you’d like to support better, or work on a project with?
You are not alone
- it's a real struggle that teacher leaders experience across the system
- as teacher leaders and subject matter experts it’s OK to need help mastering the art of dealing with the adults in the building
Since the notes - and PDF files for this are getting rather lengthy... I've created a separate page
Tech Tool: Google Classroom Updates, and Chrome Updates
- Mahfuza Rahman... Google Classroom Update
- You can now create an ASSIGNMENTS page…
- easy to find, easy to see, puts it all on one screen
- can see who has handed work in and who has not
This sharing prompted much conversation...
- We TL's the Information Specialists
- We the hub for Digital Learning within the schools
- we getting pulled in so many different directions
- now we're introducing something else new in the form of Google Classroom
- We already have D2L… can see the courses… up to teacher to activate or not
- we should be working towards where we can track a student from K-12
- worried that the Ministry going to come down on the boards and say this (D2L) the platform you to use
then what!?... - frustration that we keep showing teachers "stuff" and it never sticks… a lot of work on our part
- but, others feel that teachers want something and want to stick to it
- another take is that we do Tech PD… teach AW, D2L and Google Classroom… let teachers choose the one they're most comfortable with and run with it
- Technical note: Teachers can play around in other people's classrooms as long as when they first sign on to Google Classroom, they assign themselves the role of teacher!
- this could be a good strategy for getting people playing around with Google Classroom
- Technical note: Teachers can play around in other people's classrooms as long as when they first sign on to Google Classroom, they assign themselves the role of teacher!
- at the end of the day... we still have to be conversant in numerous technologies!
Lisa Dempster... Chrome Update
- You may have noticed an extra tab to the left of your minimise button when working in Chrome: its a spot to switch users if you log into chrome.
- You can now login to Chrome with your TDSB credentials (you may need to have opened AW or Webmail first so the system recognizes it is inside the TDSB firewall especially if you also have another gmail/google account logged in)
- find the "three bars" (top right at the end of the address bar)
- under Settings, login with your TDSB e-mail address, no password
- to log out of it you have to Disconnect the account, under Settings
- do be careful and be sure to logout/disconnect if you are on a "public" or shared computer
- All sorts of extensions that work with websites and google docs load automatically with the TDSB account: Select and Speak, as well as Read and Write Gold and more.
- you can also customize and add other extensions you want… adblockers, privacy apps etc. (under the three bars > More Tools > Extensions). You can't actually delete the ones the TDSB installed, but you can hide them if you need to (right click on them)
- Let Teaching and Learning with Technology (ex: Julie Millan) know of any other good extensions that would be useful to everyone.

Growing a Volunteer Crew: How to get them? How to keep them? What to do with them?
- Catching up from out first meeting where we ran out of time to discuss this item at our session on account of a spontaneous conversation about Copyright which popped up in the course of the meeting...
- Please follow this link to the presentation made to the East TL Group, last meeting, by Lois Lorimer Nunn, ACL at RH King

Inquiry Based Strategy/Resource
Academic Honesty Refresh and Review: A Lesson Plan
- for senior students (presented to Grade 12's in early fall)
- shared by Enid Wray (apologies I've not had time to put this on the ICT template for lesson plans!)
- PDF copy of presentation embedded below
- original was created in Keynote
- I have a copy "translated" into PPT, not perfect but pretty good
- if you'd like either of these original files, please send an e-mail
- I have a copy "translated" into PPT, not perfect but pretty good
- The really fun part of this is the before where students had to fill out a pre-survey
- It is anonymous, so they did answer with absolute honesty
- Addresses the issues raised in the presentation
- Provided a great jumping off point for class discussion about the issues, and student motivation
- Shareable link to a copy of the pre-survey here
- Please make a copy the file for your own personal use

- Find a couple of really good samples to share with the students... look at the charges, decisions, and especially the sanctions
